The nerve conduction study (NCS) is a diagnostic test commonly used to evaluate function. In particular, the ability, in the motor nerves, to transmit commands to the various muscles, or in the sensory nerves, to transmit sense information from the peripheral receptors to the medullary centers. In some cases the nerve trunks can be stimulated or registered with subcutaneous needles inserted close to the nerve.
